Base44 in production: what breaks, what to check, when to move — HyperBrain Labs field notes

Base44 gets less coverage than Lovable or Bolt, which means when your Base44 app misbehaves in production, the search results are thinner and the Reddit threads end without answers. The failures themselves are not exotic. They are the same seams every generated app has, plus a platform-specific one worth knowing about.

The platform one first. In July 2025, researchers at Wiz reported a critical authentication bypass in Base44 itself — a flaw in the platform, not in anything its users built. It was fixed, and the write-up is linked below. The lesson that outlasts the patch: on a managed builder, part of your security posture lives in code you cannot see, audit, or fix. What you can control is everything downstream of it, and that is where the checks below point.

What we check on a Base44 app before real users touch it

  • Sign up as a stranger from a private browser window on the production URL. Auth allowlists and redirect configuration that only know the build environment are the most common day-one failure.
  • Make one real payment and find its row in your database — not the payment provider's dashboard, your database. If the integration confirms in the browser instead of via a verified webhook, the money can be real while the record is not.
  • Take the app's public API credentials out of the network tab and request your own data with them from outside the app. If more comes back than a stranger should see, your data layer is open.
  • View page source and search for anything that looks like a secret key. A browser bundle cannot keep a secret; anything found there needs rotating today and moving server-side.
  • Cause one deliberate error and ask whether anything recorded it. If not, your first production bug will be reported by a customer, not by the app.

Every one of those is runnable in an afternoon without hiring anyone. If you want the longer version with pass and fail criteria, the production-readiness checklist covers all fourteen checks — written for Lovable, applicable almost unchanged here, because the seams are the same.

When staying on Base44 is the right call

If you are validating an idea — no payments yet, no sensitive records, a user count you could email personally if something went wrong — stay. Moving platforms at that stage buys risk and costs weeks, and the thing that actually decides your company's future is whether anyone wants the product. A studio that told you to migrate everything immediately would be selling you something.

When to move — and what moving actually means

The trigger is not a feature ceiling; it is the day the app starts holding things you cannot afford to lose: money, identity, records that a customer would dispute. Even then, moving does not mean rebuilding everything. The screens and flows Base44 produced encode real product decisions — keep them as the specification. What gets engineered is the spine: the payment path, auth that strangers can pass, a database that stays private under its own public key. And one rule we hold on rescues: never migrate a break. Fix the failure where it lives first, or you will move it with everything else.

If it is already failing

The first audit is free, and Base44 is one of the six platforms our App Rescue practice covers. Send the live URL and one line on what broke; we trace one real payment end to end — checkout session, payment intent, webhook signature, idempotency key, database write — and return written findings within 48 hours. The findings are yours either way, whichever platform you end up on.

Base44 and real users

Send the URL before you decide to migrate anything.

Free audit, written findings within 48 hours, fixed quote before anything is touched. If staying on Base44 with the holes closed is the cheaper path, the findings will say so.
